MOSCOW, August 28 (RIA Novosti) - Russian ambassador to Georgia Vladimir Chkhikvishvili regards hints at the forthcoming aggression against Georgia irresponsible. The ambassador announced this in his interview with the Svobodnaya Gruzia newspaper.

"Statements on the upcoming war between Russia and Georgia are absolutely irresponsible. Indeed, we held planned military exercises in North Ossetia but they have nothing to do with the events in South Ossetia," the diplomat said.

In spite of the Georgian President's order, not all the Georgian units were withdrawn from the conflict zone. "This is the fact, which should arouse concern about the repetition of the recent events," Mr. Chkhikvishvili noted.

Speaking about the role of the joint peacekeeping forces, the ambassador said that "regardless of regular critics of the peacekeeping contingent (consisting of Georgian units by one third), it remained a guarantee of peace and stability".

According to the ambassador, peace in the Georgian-Ossetian conflict zone is maintained due to the Joint Control Commission.

"We would have avoided this crisis if the main principles of the Georgian-Ossetian settlement were not violated," he continued.

The Joint Control Commission, which currently works on a permanent basis, prevented destruction and victims in the region, Vladimir Chkhikvishvili emphasized.

As for the aggravation of the situation around South Ossetia, he said that "it reminded him of the old Soviet method - to create a problem and then to start solving it with courage".

There are attempts to shift blame on somebody else, for instance, on the so-called 'third force', which provoked tensions, the diplomat added. There were rumors about Cossacks on the relief road but it was not proved, he said.
