"The advisability of Russia's accession to the CAC organization is imposed by the strategic significance of the Central Asian region for Russia, in particular, in terms of national security", emphasized Mr. Yakovenko in response to the question as to the reasons of Russia's intent to become a member of the organization.
According to him, the CAC becomes "a significant element of developing an effective system for maintaining stability in the region and contributes to the international community's efforts towards combating such current world threats as terrorism, extremism and drug trafficking".
"Russia, having specific links with the Central Asian states, which took centuries to form, is interested in their comprehensive development and strengthening both on bilateral and multilateral basis", the diplomat pointed out.
According to Mr. Yakovenko, Russia's application on accession to the CAC by joining the Agreement on establishing the CAC organization was approved on May 28 this year at a special session of the CAC Member-States Council by a unanimous decision of the presidents of all four countries.
