"In our opinion, the good relationship of the Sakhalin Region with Japan serves as a model of mutual relations between the two countries as a whole," head of the delegation Takebe Tsutomu noted at a press conference on Tuesday.
He spoke highly of the Sakhalin Region's role in relations between Russia and Japan, in ensuring "peace and prosperity in North-East Asia."
The delegation includes representatives of Japan's leading political parties forming part of the deputies' association For Return of the Northern Territories and For Intensifying the Humanitarian Exchanges with Four Islands. The members of the delegation noted with satisfaction that the inter-government talks on concluding a peace treaty between Japan and Russia are being held calmly, though they noted the toughness of both sides' stands on the question of territorial demarcation.
The Japanese parliamentarians characterized the current level of relations between Russia and Japan as having "a tendency to a frank talk" on the problems of North-East Asia.
The guests from Tokyo called upon Russia's leadership to create favourable conditions for foreign investments in the Sakhalin Region in order to implement the oil and gas projects on the shelf.
