TALLINN, September 2 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian Party of Estonia said that it intended to picket the Latvian Embassy in Tallinn in support of Russian education in Latvian schools.

A press release from the party said that the Russian speaking population in Latvia "are afraid to lose their ethnic identity and fear that the quality of education will deteriorate as a result of the forced change in the language used for teaching."

The party said that a number of large protests against the education reform took place in 2003 and 2004. However, "Latvia's ruling elite have ignored these protests and the interests of nearly half the country's population," the release said, "in other words, the Russian speaking community in Latvia, in this important issue."

The party will picket in solidarity with the defenders of Russian education in Latvia.
