CAIRO, 4 Sept - RIA Novosti. President of Egypt Hosni Mubarak expressed his condolences to the Russian nation during a meeting with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Alexander Saltanov, Russia's deputy foreign minister, told RIA Novosti that Mr Lavrov and Mr Mubarak had started their meeting by discussing the events in Beslan.

"The president of Egypt, personally and on behalf of his country, the people of Egypt, sent his sincere condolences to the Russian people and confirmed Egypt's solidarity with Russia at this difficult time," Mr Saltanov said.

According to him, Mr Mubarak said he supported President Putin's line in the war on terrorism.

The deputy minister said that Mr Mubarak and Mr Lavrov had discussed in this context how to co-ordinate the international community's efforts against terrorism.

He also pointed out that the Russian foreign minister and Egyptian leader had discussed the Middle East peace process and the situation in Iraq.

Mr Saltanov explained that the sides noted how the situation in the Middle East was not improving, which was linked, above all, to the continuing crisis in Iraq and the lack of progress in the Israeli-Palestinian settlement.

According to him, the Russian minister pointed to the importance of continuing the political process in Iraq on the basis of UN Security Council resolutions.

Mr Lavrov and Mr Mubarak also discussed the possibility of convening an international conference on Iraq. The Egyptian side supported this Russian proposal.

The Russian and Egyptian sides confirmed that the road map peace plan remained the only sensible alternative to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and create an independent Palestine.

The Egyptian president and the Russian foreign minister also discussed Russo-Egyptian relations and prospects for their development.
