The contacts will not go on before Bosnia-Herzegovina pays stale gas import arrears for 1991-95, pointed out Mr. Miller. He, however, acknowledged that recent years had offered no problems, with Gasprom exports steadily rising.
The 1991-95 debt makes US$104.8 million. The two governments are thinking whether the issue may be settled by accounting an even older debt-Soviet clearing indebtedness to former Yugoslavia.
Bosnia-Herzegovina is now paying for Russian gas in full and on schedule. Roughly 300 million cubic metres has been earmarked for this year's supplies.
Russian gas exports to Bosnia-Herzegovina started in 1978. Now, Russia is its only natural gas supplier.
Gas exports followed an intergovernmental agreement before Yugoslavia collapsed. No agreement was made with Bosnia-Herzegovina's independence.
Chances for a long-term contract did not even come under discussion till quite recently, what with a stale debt. An acting contract was repeatedly prolonged for short terms. The current is expiring, October 1.
