KALININGRAD, September 10 (RIA Novosti's Anatoly Nilov) - An international show-jumping tournament is opening in the Kaliningrad Region on Friday, the organizing committee of the equestrian competition reported.

"The tournament will take place at Georgenburg stud farm in the town of Chernyakhovsk. The competition has a high, CSI, status or four stars according to the version of the International Federation of Equestrian Sports," the agency's interlocutor added.

He went on to say that "winners and medallists of world and European championships and Olympic Games from 17 countries will participate in the competition."

"All of them will vie for the Cup of the stud farm and for qualification points which go into the classification of the 2005 European championship," an organizing committee member said.

The tournament will last till September 12.

The breeding of horses near the bishop of Samland's fortress Georgenburg (near Insterbourg, now Chernyakhovsk), built by the crusaders, began in 1377. In the 19th century, they bred horses for the royal court there, and since 1899 these were already state stables of East Prussia's directorate of stud farms.

The Chernyakhovsk state stable was established on the basis of the Georgenburg stud farm in 1948. In the 1960s the stud farm began breeding horses from Germany - of the Hannover and Holstiner breeds, and from the middle of the 1970s - of the Trakener breed.

The Kaliningrad Stud Farm was set up in Chernyakhovsk in 1992. Its historical name, Georgenburg, was quite recently returned to it. It was only in 1997 that the stud farm managed to revive the tradition of Insterbourg equestrian competitions.
