Kryuchkov previously authored two books, On the Brink and A Personal Matter.
As he addressed a gathering to introduce his latest literary endeavour to the public, Mr. Kryuchkov said he had written it "to see how to protect the community from people who make their way to the top without the slightest endowments the high posts require".
He is to apply final brushstrokes to another book, he said-a retrospect of the years 1988 into this. "If I were to write from dawn to dusk every day, and had another lifetime in store, even then I would not have enough time to say all I know. But then, I led the Soviet intelligence service for fifteen years, and the KGB for three-so I have no right to blurt out everything I happen to know," remarked the secret service veteran.
When a newsman asked him about a list he is alleged to possess of influence agents who caused the USSR's collapse, Mr. Kryuchkov snapped he had no right to go into whatever details.
