ST. PETE FOR COLD WAR MONUMENT

ST. PETERSBURG, September 14 (RIA Novosti's Anna Novak) - John Young, major American architect, hopes St. Petersburg will have his memorial of the Cold War end. Twenty Russian and US submarine stabilisers will make its principal part.

Mr. Young means to emphasise Russian-US unity, says Igor Kurdin, St. Petersburg submariners' club president.

The memorial must be on the seashore, insists the architect. Kronstadt, a famous St. Pete suburbia, is deemed the best site for it.

Mr. Young faced a VIP audience at the Rubin shipbuilding R&D bureau yesterday. Academician Igor Spassky, Rubin manager, had the chair. The gathering, which heartily approved the blueprints, represented the city architectural committee, architects' guild, municipal public council, and the US consular office.

Victor Surikov, Kronstadt mayor, is receiving John Young tomorrow to discuss prospective sites.

The US-based foundation From Swords to Ploughshares is willing to grant the 400,000 dollars necessary to erect the memorial.

Mr. Young has installed similar sub stabiliser Cold War monuments in two American cities for now.
