MOSCOW, September 21 (RIA Novosti) - The prevention of arms race in space is among Russia's priorities at the Disarmament Conference, says the communique of the Press and Information Board of the Russian Foreign Ministry on results of the 2004 Geneva session.

"Minding the importance of preventing the arms race in space for all states without exception, Russia thinks obligatory the inclusion of this item in the work programme of the future Disarmament Conference", the communique reads.

The Foreign Ministry stresses that the Russian side "has been doing consistent work promoting this theme". Representatives of many leading states and international associations, including Canada, France, Germany, India, Brazil, the European Union, the Non-Alignment Movement, voiced, in this or that form, support for the relative Russian approaches and initiatives.

Meanwhile, "despite the active efforts made by the Russian and many other delegations, the Disarmament Conference has failed also this year to coordinate its work programme on the basis of the agenda, approved earlier in the year", the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

"Therefore, activities of this organisation, consisting in the development of many-sided legally binding instruments in the field of disarmament and international security, have not been resumed", the communique reads.

The Foreign Ministry notes as an encouraging aspect the unofficial plenary sessions at the Conference discussing the approaches of states to all the items on the agenda - ending the nuclear arms race and nuclear disarmament.

"We are for undelayed coordination of the work programme of the Disarmament Conference, creation of corresponding mechanisms for talks and discussion and, eventually, for getting down to business", the Foreign Ministry stresses.

Sixty five member states and 38 observer states participated in the regular session of the Disarmament Conference, which ended in Geneva on September 12.
