"I think it's high time for other members of the Nuclear Club to join the process of nuclear disarmament", he said. "If they don't, it will be hard to attain understanding and observance of the non-proliferation regime from the 30 states having nuclear technologies".
The programme of assistance to disarmament and elimination of weapons of mass destruction targets educating the public at large on real programmes which exist in this field, fighting misinformation and lack of understanding of the problems topical for the entire world under the motto "honesty, transparency and reliability".
Initiators are going to carry out explanatory and informative work through the mass media and events arranged towards this end.
The programme was established under the patronage of well-known British nuclear physicist and fighter for peace Professor Joseph Rhotblat, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. Sir Joseph Rhotblat, 96, is the chairman of Pugwash conferences, established in the 1950s with the involvement of prominent scientists Bertran Russel and Albert Einstein.
Among the initiators are the international organisations Pugwash conferences, Pax Christi, Greenpeace, Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and other British and multinational non-governmental bodies.
"The problem of weapons of mass destruction is now in the focus of attention also in the light of the fight on international terrorism", Mikhail Gorbachel told the London news conference. "If weapons of mass destruction get into the hands of terrorist, this will entail catastrophic consequences. We must do everything for such weapons to be out of reach for terrorists", Mikhail Gorbachev emphasised.
