"There are problems with human rights violation in Chechnya, and the main one is kidnapping," said Mr. Alkhanov.
"It's necessary to note that these facts reduce from year to year. Now there are much fewer of them than in previous years," he emphasized.
"We have set a clear task - to rule out these facts from Chechnya's life. This task in not easy, but there are ways of its resolution," said the Chechen president elect.
On his part, Mr. Gil-Robles assured Mr. Alkhanov of full support of "the Council of Europe in general and the whole international community." The commissioner said he would continue to keep track of the situation with human rights in Chechnya.
"I am here to show my support of the policy toward Chechnya's democratization," said the European commissioner.
On Saturday morning, Alvaro Gil-Robles visited Grozny social sphere facilities. He visited a bank where compensations are paid out to citizens who lost housing and property, visited a temporary accommodation center, a school and a hospital in Grozny, where he talked to city residents.
The Chechen president and the Council of Europe commissioner agreed to hold a working meeting in six months to discuss the human rights situation again.
