BISHKEK, September 29 (RIA Novosti) - The Kyrgyz government banned the importation to the republic of radioactive wastes from Britain, which were planned to be processed at the Kara-Balt mining integrated works, says

the statement of the Kyrgyz government's information department circulated on Wednesday.

"The government considered this question three months ago on the inquiry of a deputy of the legislative assembly concerning the importation to the country of a substance containing 5% of uranium and 95% of graphite," the statement says.

At that time a negative answer was given, and the stand of the Kyrgyz government has not changed since then, it is pointed out in the document.

"The decision was made in connection with the absence of guarantees for the subsequent safe burying of the uranium-containing materials processed at the Kara-Balt mining integrated works and in compliance with the requirements of the international safety standards," the government's statement says.

According to RIA Novosti, a British enterprise planned to send to Kyrgyzstan about 2,000 metric tons of radioactive wastes for processing.
