RELIGIOUS LEADERS BACKING REGIME ON ANTI-TERROR CAUSE

MOSCOW, September 29 (RIA Novosti) - The presidential council on interaction with religious communities approves and supports the Russian secular top's efforts to guarantee the nation's safety and repulse the terror danger-a goal President Vladimir Putin has posed, says a statement in which the council sums up its Kremlin session today.

"To make an effective rebuff to terrorism, the state and civil society are to pool efforts. Religious communities, public organizations, political parties and the entire population are to consolidate," calls the statement.

Terrorism is a tremendous danger, and demands a cemented civilized world to offer it due response, with double standards ruled out, points out the council.

"We are appealing to all religious leaders to explain to their flock the dire necessity of current steps for public safety. We call on the pious to offer every assistance to authorities and law enforcement bodies," says the statement.

"Our enemy is out to steep Russia into chaos and lawlessness. So, as we are fighting the terror threat, we must closely abide by standards offered in the Constitution and other Russian laws," stressed the conferees.

"As the historical experience of the entire human race-Russia's, too-shows, whenever the law and humanism were abandoned in the zeal of fight, that fight was bringing extremely tragic fruit. Such errors are not to repeat," the council emphasized in its statement.

The conferees spoke up "to give a new impetus to public contacts and make them healthier for this country to stop a war that is being waged though it has never been declared," Cyril the Metropolitan of Smolensk and Kaliningrad said to a media audience following the session.

The council gathered for session after President Vladimir Putin announced his new initiatives to buttress federal administration and preserve Russia's unity, said Ravil Gainutdin, head of the Russian Muftiyyate. "We expressed unlimited support of the President's efforts. It is in the interests of all, religious believers being no exception, to see Russia strong and consolidated for all to live a calm and peaceful life in a united country. We are willing to coordinate our action, cooperate with the state, and consolidate our religious communities-especially for combat on terrorism and extremism."

Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz, Ordinary of the Moscow Roman Catholic archdiocese of Our Lady, was next to speak to newsmen after the council session.

"Society is to be at one now that trouble has come to our home. The Church is in duty bound to help the community as it is building its house on the firm foundation of morals. Spokesmen of many religions were conferring today. That was of major importance. It brought us all closer together for a stride to further consolidation of society," said the archbishop.
