DAY OF RUSSIA IN ALEXANDRIA'S LIBRARY

CAIRO, October 1 (RIA Novosti's Igor Kuznetsov) - On October 1 the famous Bibliotheca Alexandrina - a library in the Egyptian city of Alexandria - will host the Day of Russia.

As RIA Novosti was told by Gennady Goryachkin, director of the Russian Cultural Center (RCC) in Alexandria, Russia's gift to the library - about 6,000 books, which include translations of Arab authors into Russian and Russian authors into Arabic, works by Russian Egyptologists, experts in oriental and Arab studies and historians, as well as 50 video cassettes with Russian operas and ballets recorded on them and feature films, and 50 audio records - will be handed over to the library's administration at a special ceremony.

Also opened will be the memorial exposition devoted to the famous Russian ballet dancer Anna Pavlova (1881-1931) who was on tour in Egypt three times: in 1910, 1923, and 1928. The exposition also includes slides, photos and films about the great ballet dancer, the posters of her guest performances in Cairo and Alexandria, reviews from local newspapers, as well as a bronze statuette of Anna Pavlova performing the dragonfly's dance.

The technique and talent of Anna Pavlova gave the impulse to the creation in Egypt of a local ballet school, which involved Soviet and Russian choreographers.

The other day, a week of Russian films was held in Alexandria's movie theaters, seven films are currently shown in Mersa Matruh city to the west of Alexandria.

The Alexandrina museum will have on display the expositions devoted to other famous cultural figures and writers linked with Egypt.

For instance, the Ukrainian section is devoted to writer Lesya Ukrainka (1871-1913) who three years running went to Heluan near Cairo for treatment from bone tuberculoses and wrote some of her books there.

The museum will be officially opened in mid-October by Suzanne Mubarak, the spouse of the President of Egypt.
