TIRASPOL, October 6 (RIA Novosti's Vladimir Sandutsa) - The authorities of the unrecognized Transdniestrian Moldovan republic (territory of the Dniester's left bank with a capital in Tiraspol with mostly multiethnic Russian-speaking population, which in early 1990s withdrew from Chisinau's jurisdiction) intend to hold a referendum on the further fate of the republic. Pyotr Pasat, a member of a special working group, said on Wednesday that numerous addresses by citizens and public organizations were the reason for referendum.

In his words, the population demands stopping any talks about establishment with Moldova of a federative state. This demand is in line with the unrecognized republic's constitution, according to which Transdniestria is "a sovereign and independent state."

"These talks may be held only after a referendum, when the people speak out whether they are ready to build a federation with Moldova or not," said Mr. Pasat.

In a month's time, the working group comprising three deputies of regional parliament and three representatives of executive power is to study the mechanism of preparation and holding of the referendum. The group is to submit its recommendations to the Supreme Council (parliament) of Transdniestria, which will make the final decision.

Earlier Tiraspol repeatedly proposed that Chisinau hold under the aegis of international organizations a separate referendum on the future federation, using the Cyprus model as an example.
