The Russian serviceman was wounded at 19.15 Moscow time at the peacekeeping checkpoint in Artsevi. Commander of the mixed peacekeeping forces Major General Marat Kulamkhatov went to investigate the accident.
"Contract soldier Roman Shichkov was wounded in the stomach from a passing VAZ-2106 car of dark color with Georgian numbers. He got a penetrating wound. His stomach, spleen and intestines were hurt. His life is out of danger now," the information and press committee reported.
The serviceman was taken to the central hospital of Tskhinvali (South Ossetian capital) and operated. His condition is satisfactory.
The joint staff and South Ossetian law enforcement bodies have launched the investigation of the accident and criminal proceedings.
The mixed peacekeeping forces have been controlling the situation in the Georgian-Ossetian conflict zone since 1992. They comprise Russian, Georgian, South Ossetian and North Ossetian servicemen (North Ossetia is Russia's constituent republic). The Georgian-Ossetian conflict has aggravated after the recent power shift in Georgia.
