GROZNY, October 23 (RIA Novosti) - Criminals in Chechnya make up groups to extort money from Chechens, the Regional Operational Headquarters (ROH) for the Anti-Terrorist Operation in the North Caucasus said in a press release.

"Members of illegal criminal groups have made up separate groups that specialise in extorting compensations provided by the authorities," reads the press release.

One of the groups is active in Chechnya's Shatoi district, and it is led by Ismailov, according to a press release.

"There is also a group led by Abdullayev. It is based in the Vedeno district," says the press release.

Witnesses said the bandits regularly extorted part of the compensations from Vedeno residents. "They sometimes extort up to 50% of the compensation," said the ROH.

Shelkovskoi district residents also report on such instances. Locals approach law enforcement bodies with extortion complaints almost every week.

"Law enforcement bodies are investigating in all reported extortion cases with the aim of arresting criminals and make them repay the extorted money," assured the headquarters.
