RUSSIA, GERMANY TO SIGN PROTOCOL ON TRANSIT TO AFGHANISTAN

MOSCOW, October 26. (RIA Novosti) - On Tuesday Russia and Germany will sign an additional protocol onh ground military transit to Afghanistan. It will be signed by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and German Ambassador to Moscow, Hans-Friedrich von Ploetz.

The document is an addition to the current Russian-German agreement on transit of military equipment and personnel via the Russian territory due to Germany's participation in the peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan.

The agreement was signed on October 9, 2003 and upon coordination between the parties has been temporarily applied since the beginning of the year. It envisages the procedure of transit of German weapons, military equipment, property and personnel via the Russian territory in order to support international efforts to stabilize and restore Afghanistan.

At present the transit is conducted in the air. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, about ten German planes bound for Afghanistan fly through the Russian airspace monthly.

Russia has a transit agreement with France as well. It regulates parameters of transit of French units to Afghanistan via Russia.
