MOSCOW, October 28 (RIA Novosti) - In accordance with the decision of the Security Council, multiethnic coalition forces, instead of the UN, should provide safety in Iraq during the elections of the new government, Yury Fedotov, the Russian Deputy Foreign minister, told RIA Novosti.

According to the Russian diplomat, "the multiethnic coalition forces should form a special separate contingent in order to provide safety of the election process, as well as of the UN staffers, entitled to prepare the elections in Iraq in the beginning of 2005. The UN is unable to provide the security of its staffers in Iraq."

As it was earlier reported by Iraqi radio Sava, Interim Iraqi Prime Minister Ayad Allawi appealed to UN to assist in provision of security during national elections.

According to the radio station, Mr. Allawi held a personal meeting with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and asked him to send a contingent of UN forces to Iraq in order to provide a comprehensive security in the course of the forthcoming election process.
