WASHINGTON'S ENVOY VISITS ISLAMABAD TO DISCUSS SITUATION IN AFGHANISTAN

ISLAMABAD, November 8 (RIA Novosti) - U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Richard Armitage arrives in Islamabad on Monday to hold talks with Pakistani leadership.

According to reports on national TV, Mr. Armitage will meet with Pakistani President, General Pervez Musharraf, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and Foreign Minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri.

During the talks, the sides will focus on the perspectives of the U.S. policies in relation to Pakistan during the second term of Bush's administration at the White House, including joint efforts in the fight against terrorism. They will also discuss the situation in Afghanistan, possible scenarios of its future development in the light of the recent election of Hamid Karzai for the post of President of Afghanistan, and issues of economic revival of that country.

Another set of important issues scheduled for discussion is the current state of relations between Pakistan and India and the continuation of the political dialogue between Islamabad and New Delhi aimed at peaceful settlement of existing antagonisms, in particular - the Kashmir problem. In addition, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State plans to discuss the situation in the Middle East and Iraq.
