ABKHAZIA SLIDING INTO CHAOS, WARNS MOSCOW

MOSCOW, November 12 (RIA Novosti) - Russia will have to take necessary steps to protect its interests in case of violent power seizure in Abkhazia, says Alexander Yakovenko, official spokesman of Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Attempts to overthrow the regime have been lately reported from Sukhumi, Abkhaz capital. The attackers side with Sergei Bagapsh, one of the presidential hopefuls, and are out to force down Abkhazia's incumbent President and Prime Minister, Mr. Yakovenko said in a Moscow Echo radio cast tonight.

Violence may bring dire fruit-and Abkhazia is to see that Bagapsh and his men, who want to come to power by force, will bear the entire responsibility, stressed the diplomat.

Illegal violent action alarms Moscow. The developments may destabilise not Abkhazia alone but the entire region, he went on.

Moscow is keeping abreast with the situation, and is sure of responsible Abkhaz political forces will not succumb to provocation, and will pursue their people's interests within legal limits, Alexander Yakovenko concluded.

Raul Khajimba, who lost a presidential election of October 3 to Sergei Bagapsh, won't put up with his setback. He does not think he has any chance to start a dialogue with his rival.

"I talked to Bagapsh today. We weighed the possibility to go on with the talks tomorrow. Now, I don't think we shall. I can't have a dialogue with bloodshed on-a man gets wounded, then another and another," he said hotly.

When his sympathisers asked whether he would give up his striving for presidency, Khajimba snapped:

"I am not so easily put off. I'm not the man to beat a despondent retreat." He severely condemned Bagapsh's followers, who seized the parliamentary, governmental and presidential staff premises today. Several were injured.
