"All the forum's participants acknowledge the need to find adequate responses to this threat to regional stability," he said. "Undoubtedly, APEC has the serious and necessary potential to take practical measures."
According to him, Russia is involved in the development of counter-terrorism cooperation within the framework of APEC, in particular, it is the proactive work of APEC's special antiterrorism group.
"We want to increase cooperation with international and regional organizations and institutions, including financial ones in this sphere," he said.
During the APEC forum (November 17-21) in Santiago, Chile, a wide range of regional economic problems will be discussed, Mr. Yakovenko noted.
He said APEC's tasks had much in common with the demands of current economic reforms in Russia including the management of economic processes and structural economic reforms, the improvement of the tax and customs systems, interaction in energy, agriculture, transportation, information technologies and ecology and assistance to businessmen.
"We regard our active participation in APEC as an effective instrument for implementing Russia's long-term strategic policy in the Asia-Pacific region which is designed to form a zone of stability and dynamic growth," he said. "It would increase Russia's economic development, especially, in its eastern regions, and their organic integration into the economic structure of the Asia-Pacific region."
According to him, Moscow expects APEC to confirm its support for Russia's accession to the World Trade Organization.
