Answering the RIA Novosti's question on the results he expected from the summit Mr. Solana said they were connected with the coordination of road maps on the four common cooperation spaces.
"There are some contradictions but we have achieved certain progress in the recent weeks. Undoubtedly, we shall hail Russia's positive move on the ratification of the Kyoto protocol and EU expansion. Moreover, we should focus on the fight against terrorism. This is a priority issue," Javier Solana said.
As for the EU position on the Kaliningrad transit (the Kaliningrad region is Russia's exclave on the Baltic Sea) and observation of rights of the Russian-speaking population in the Baltic states, Mr. Solana said that Brussels understood Russia's concern about these two problems and regularly discussed it with Russian partners.
"The work on the implementation of decisions coordinated by the sides in November 2002 and April 2004 has begun already. So, I see no reasons for concern," Javier Solana noted.
According to him, the European Union thoroughly considered the situation in Latvia and Estonia before their accession to the EU taking into account the recommendations of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
"We came to a conclusion that both countries fulfill the so-called Copenhagen criteria for EU member-states, in particular, the protection of national minorities' rights. We are firmly convinced in it. Meanwhile, we are ready to discuss with Russia other human rights problems," the EU High Commissioner stressed.
