When asked whether Russia might use nuclear weapons to eradicate terrorist bases, Baluyevsky assured journalists that it would not use them.
At the same time, he announced Russia's commitment to fight terrorism within the framework of "legitimate international law".
General Jones, also speaking on war on terrorism, said, "We send terrorists a signal that there is no hiding place for them and we, within international law, will get to them."
By February 1, 2005, Russia will complete formation of a unit meant specifically for peacekeeping operations, Baluyevsky announced.
When asked about the result of his talks with Jones, he said that plan of cooperation between Russia and NATO for 2005 was "maximally practical".
"We shift from issues of seminars, colloquiums and other discussions to issues of practical interaction, which is very important," he emphasized.
Speaking on interoperability between Russian and NATO troops, he said, "In fact, we dealt with interoperability at the tactical level earlier in Kosovo. Today we should raise these issues to a higher level."
