RIO DE JANEIRO, November 16 (RIA Novosti's Andrei Kurguzov) - Brazil views cooperation with Russia in space and in the high technologies sphere as "strategically important", general director of the Environment and Special Themes Department of Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Everton Vieira Vargas said in the exclusive interview with RIA Novosti in the run-up to the forthcoming official visit of president Vladimir Putin of Russia to Brazil.

According to him, Brazil and Russia always held a positive dialogue on the questions of multipolarity and the role of the UN in present-day society, and this mutual understanding is an important factor for development of relations between the two countries.

"Promising cooperation in one more sphere which seems to have exceedingly great prospects is now becoming visible between our two countries," the Foreign Ministry representative noted speaking of cooperation in the space sphere.

In Everton Vieira's opinion, in this sphere "Russia can offer much to Brazil and receive much in exchange considering the extremely gainful geographical situation of the Alcantara space center - only two degrees away from the Equator."

"We hold the view that cooperation with Russia in devising a carrier rocket will necessitate improvement of the existing launching pad or construction of a new one. Having amassed vast experience in launchings and in building launching pads, the Russian specialists will render invaluable assistance in the construction of the space center," the Brazilian diplomat stated.

In his opinion, it is the beginning of long-term cooperation in the course of which Brazil will receive the most beneficial conditions for injecting rockets to space, specifically for carrying out commercial launchings.

"In the course of the implementation of the joint project Brazil intends to improve the existing VLS carrier rocket, which envisages gradual switching engines over from solid fuel to liquid fuel," Everton Vieira went on to say.

According to him, "the national space program enables Brazil to cooperate with Russia, and I do not rule it out that even an altogether new carrier rocket will be devised in the future."
