VLADIVOSTOK, November 17 (RIA Novosti's Anatoly Ilyukhov) - On Wednesday, the commission for combating crime in the administrative center of the Maritime Territory decided to set up a coordination center to protect marine life in the Maritime Territory (a Russian region on the Sea of Japan).

According to Vasily Zakharyev, deputy head of the FSB's Maritime Frontier Directorate state control center, the Maritime Territory exports seafood caught in the Sea of Japan to the northeast Asian ports.

Poaching is rampant in this industry. Poaching occurs mainly in the Peter the Great Bay (Vladivostok's water area) and in waters abut to Russia's exclusive economic zone.

In this area, poachers catch crab, trepangs, sea urchin, squid, herring and shrimp.

According to the commission, the scale of the poaching continues to grow and annually about $50 million of illegal seafood is caught. About 10,000 metric tons of seafood is illegally sold every year in Japan and South Korea.

The commission said the most effective method of combating poaching would be suspending or revoking the licenses of enterprises that have flagrantly violated environmental protection laws.
