PUTIN GREETS YANUKOVICH ON VICTORY IN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IN UKRAINE

BRAZILIA, November 22 (RIA Novosti) - Vladimir Putin by telephone has greeted Victor Yanukovich on the victory in the presidential election in Ukraine.

The Kremlin press secretary Alexei Gromov reports that during the talk "it was stressed that the struggle was acute, though open and honest, and the victory convincing".

In turn, Yanukovich sincerely thanked the Russian president and expressed confidence in the positive development of relations between Ukraine and Russia.

As a result of processing actually 100 percent of the votes, 49.42 percent were for Victor Yanukovich, 46.70 percent for Victor Yuschenko. These figures, as of 15:30 Moscow time, were cited in Kiev by Sergei Kivalov, chairman of the Central Election Commission.

30,235,468 people have taken part in the election.

On Monday Vladimir Putin has had a telephone conversation with the incumbent Ukrainian president, Leonid Kuchma.

Agreement has been reached on holding before long a meeting between Putin and Kuchma, presidential press secretary Alexei Gromov told journalists.

The meeting will take place in St.Petersburg, he specified.
