INDONESIA NEEDS RUSSIA'S HELP IN ITS MILITARY DEVELOPMENT

JAKARTA, November 26 (RIA Novosti) - Indonesia needs Russia's help in its military development, Chief of Staff of Indonesian Armed Forces Vice-Marshall Wartoyo said at his meeting with Rosoboronexport director-at-large, head of the Russian delegation at the Indo Defense 2004 Nikolai Dimidyuk.

According to Mr. Dimidyuk, the Indonesian Chief of Staff thanked Rosoboronexport - the only Russian state mediator for promotion of military products abroad - for representative participation in the first after the long break (since 1996) exhibition of arms in Jakarta, which "enabled the Indonesian military commandment to get to know the samples of Russian arms, to compare them to foreign analogues and make its choice."

"The Vice-Marshall told me about the plans concerning the Indonesian military development. According to the plans, at the first stage the main emphasis will be laid on the development of aviation with the further formation of air defense system, where Indonesia gives a priority to the middle-range systems similar to presented at the exhibition Russian antiaircraft missile system Buk-M1," Nikolai Dimidyuk said.

According to him, the Indonesian Chief of Staff "assured us of Indonesian readiness for the further cooperation with Rosoboronexport, having expressed his wish to simplify the post-sale maintenance of the purchased equipment."

At the same time he stressed that "Indonesia stated its interest in not only direct purchases, but in acquirement of the Russian know-how for the development of its own military industry.

According to Nikolai Dimidyuk, following the meeting with the Chief of Staff, attended by commanders of all Indonesian military branches, a group of military specialists visited the Rosoboronexport pavilion for detailed discussion of possibilities concerning the new purchases.
