IRAN WISHING TO KEEP 20 CENTRIFUGES FOR RESEARCH

TEHRAN, November 26 (RIA Novosti) - Iran's seeking the IAEA's permission to keep 20 centrifuges for research ends is a technical question, Hossein Musavian, Iran's envoy to IAEA's session of board of governors in Vienna, stated.

"Iran wants to carry on using 20 uranium-enrichment centrifuges for research ends without the fissionable material," head of the IAEA Mohammed ElBaradei said Thursday.

"The debate on the 20 centrifuges is a technical question, it is not significant, and we hope that the problem will be settled in current talks with the agency and the European Union," the statement by Musavian published on Friday reads.

According to the official, "the Iranian party wants all questions to be solved within the framework of Iranian nuclear agreements reached between Tehran and three European countries [the UK, France and Germany] earlier."

While adjusting the resolution of the IAEA's Board of Governors, the parties confirmed that Iran's suspending work on uranium enrichment was a voluntary measure supposing no legal obligations, the Iranian envoy pointed out.

"The second issue related to introducing a clause about 'a trigger mechanism' of submitting the Iranian nuclear file to the UN Security Council in case of non-compliance with some or other obligation is under consideration, and there are differences on some points," Musavian said.

"The third problem," he continued, "is that any kind of activity by the IAEA's Board of Governors as well as the very agency must be carried out within the framework of the Non-Proliferation Treaty and the applicable Additional Protocol."

"The fourth question supposes switching the consideration of the Iranian nuclear file onto a normal track, which means that the problem of the Islamic Republic's nuclear schemes must leave the agenda of the agency's governing body," said the Iranian representative.

The envoy also described today's talks to adjust the resolution on Iran as effective.

Expectedly, the final draft resolution will be put to a vote at the IAEA Board of Governors on Monday.
