MOSCOW, November 29 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs appeals to promote Road Map-guided peace efforts in the Middle East, says deputy minister Yuri Fedotov.

"We are calling on the new Palestinian leadership to display political goodwill and do everything possible for progress to peace, based on the Road Map," he said to a gala evening on the international day of solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Current developments in the Middle East clash with the principles of peace and humanism, stressed Mr. Fedotov.

Sergei Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs, recently visited Israel and Palestinian territories. As his trip showed, "Israelis and Palestinians alike are eager to turn over a new leaf in their relations, and put an end to mutual mistrust."

Israel is, first of all, to lift its blockade of the Palestinian lands, and ease the plight of their population, who is on the brink of disaster, stressed the Russian diplomat.

He called on Israel to provide beneficial conditions for Palestinians to elect their new National Authority leader.

Terror and violence cannot bring peace, so they must stop in that part of the world, emphasized Yuri Fedotov.
