UKRAINE'S PROSECUTOR GENERAL'S OFFICE LAUNCHES INVESTIGATION INTO ACTS AIMED TO SEIZE POWER

KIEV, November 30 (RIA Novosti) - Ukraine's Prosecutor General's Office has opened criminal proceedings in the wake of the deliberate acts aimed at the forcible change and the overthrow of the constitutional regime, the seizure of power and encroachment on Ukraine's territorial integrity.

A relevant resolution was signed by Ukrainian Prosecutor General Gennady Vasilyev, the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office told RIA Novosti.

On Sunday, the national congress of local self-government bodies that took place in Severodonetsk, Ukraine's Lugansk region, adopted a decision to hold a referendum on establishing a Southeast republic in the event Viktor Yanukovich is not recognized president. In that event the referendum will take place on December 12.

A number of western and central councils of different levels, including the Kiev council, declined to accept the presidential election results as declared by the Central Election Commission. Some regional councils in western Ukraine even declared Viktor Yushchenko legitimate president.

Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council called on local government bodies to annul the illegal decisions on Saturday.
