KUCHMA AND PUTIN COME OUT AGAINST RERUN OF PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS

MOSCOW, December 2 (RIA Novosti) - Leonid Kuchma and Vladimir Putin criticize the idea if rerunning of the second round of the presidential elections in Ukraine. According to them, this cannot settle the crisis because it will infringe upon the rights of one of the sides in any case.

"Such juridical procedure does not exist in any country," the Ukrainian leader told Vladimir Putin at the Vnukovo-2 governmental airport, where the two leaders held a meeting.

In his words, it will be a plebiscite.

Mr. Putin agreed with his Ukrainian counterpart saying that he was surprised with the proposals to rerun the elections.

"This will yield no results. The elections can be rerun for the third, forth, twenty-fifth times until one of the sides is satisfied," the Russian President said.

Mr. Kuchma believes that at the moment the most important thing is the Ukrainian Supreme Court's verdict on Viktor Yushchenko's complaint. "The Supreme Court should determine if there were any violations or not," he noted.

According to him, the parliament has already made the political decision. This is correct. We should seek a political settlement. The process seems to be very simple: the Supreme Court's decision, a constitutional reform, and the formation of the parliamentary government in a few days," Leonid Kuchma said.

In this case the parliament will be responsible for the developments in the country, he emphasized. "After that, a commission will consider proposals on the new elections," he added.

Leonid Kuchma told Vladimir Putin about the results of the Wednesday roundtable with presidential candidates Viktor Yanukovich and Viktor Yushchenko and international intermediaries.

"It seemed that yesterday we found a political-legal settlement of the conflict. We shook each other's hands but it is necessary to unblock the state institutions," the Ukrainian President said.

The roundtable participants issued a joint statement, which contained a provision on the unblocking of state institutions. However, the opposition supporters did nothing. "We are not going to unblock anything," said opposition leader Yulia Timoshenko.

"They do not let the government work," Mr. Kuchma complained.

"A compromise seems to be found, in particular, in the legal sphere, however, I have no idea of the further developments," the Ukrainian President added.

After the meeting with Leonid Kuchma, Vladimir Putin flew to India on an official visit.
