NEW DELHI, Dec 3 (RIA Novosti) - Vladimir Putin believes eroding the most efficient instruments of the UN Security Council is unacceptable.

"Otherwise, the UN will completely lose the significance and role and will turn into an interest club, a new edition of the League of Nations. There should certainly be no infringement upon the rights of permanent UN Security Council members," said the Russian president at a press conference in New Delhi.

Mr. Putin noted that Russia was for the UN preserving its universal nature and being an efficient instrument of resolution of all international problems in modern conditions.

"We support reorganization, including with the help of expanding the composition of UN Security Council permanent members," said the Russian president.

"India is the world's largest state. India is our strategic privileged partner," said Mr. Putin. "If we speak about enlarging the UN Security Council by regional principle, India is unconditionally No. 1 from the point of view of a possibility to enlarge the UN Security Council."

The president said Russia was flexible enough during the negotiating process on these problems with India. "It can be said that we have full understanding with Indian partners on this issue," said the head of the Russian state.
