CIS INTER-PARLIAMENTARY ASSEMBLY APPROVES COUNTER-TERRORISM PROGRAM

ST. PETERSBURG, December 4 (RIA Novosti - Northwest, Dina Danilova) - The 24th plenary session of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) closed in the Tavrichesky Palace in St. Petersburg on Saturday.

"We have done a lot. I would like to point out three counter-terrorism draft laws, which were approved at the session," Speaker of the Russian Federation Council Sergei Mironov told journalists at the final briefing.

The session participants discussed the CIS counter-terrorism program for 2005-2007, approved the draft concept of the CIS convention on anti-terrorism and anti-extremism cooperation and made a decision to introduce amendments to the model law "On Counter-terrorism."

The resolution "On the reinforcement of the role of CIS parliaments in the fight against international terrorism" was approved as well.

Moreover, the session participants adopted model laws "On countering organizations and persons who aim to perform acts of terrorism in foreign countries" and "On control over the turnover of radioactive materials."

The session also focused on tasks and problems of cultural cooperation between the CIS countries. The parliamentarians passed the law "On cultural cooperation between the CIS member-states," as well as model laws "On Culture" and "On Languages."

In addition, they adopted model laws "On the status of the human rights commissioner" and "On the principles of medical and social protection of people with diabetes" and the new wording of recommendations for CIS international observers at elections and referendums.

The MPs also adopted the model Land Code for CIS member-states and some other model laws.

All the 13 laws adopted at the 24th plenary session of the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly will be submitted to parliaments and recommended for use in the national legislations of the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly member countries.
