"We discussed ways of improving contacts between CIS ombudsmen and agreed to meet twice a year. Our meetings will not be covered by protocol formalities. We are going to set the agenda for each meeting well in advance to ensure that we discuss the most vital issues pertaining to human rights protection," Mr. Lukin said.
"We will start with establishing a coordination committee and intend to work in its framework afterwards," he added.
"The cause of human rights protection is based on general principles, but its enforcement is a very delicate and specific matter, differing from country to country," Vladimir Lukin pointed out. Therefore, in his opinion, establishment of a coordination committee of CIS ombudsmen is "a more subtle and less politically binding move" than, for example, institution of a special post of a CIS Commissioner for Human Rights.
