"In the event we reach an agreement, we will run for president as a team and remove all armed men," said Mr Bagapsh. He emphasised that in the event they reach a compromise in the near future, his inauguration (fixed for December 6) will be cancelled.
Mr Bagapsh added that he would run for president at new elections, while Mr Khadzhimba for vice-president.
Mr Khadzhimba confirmed the information. "The incumbent president is aware of the talks we are holding today. I believe we will reach an agreement," he said.
Mr Bagapsh emphasised that if they reached a compromise it would be mainly thanks to Mr Khadzhimba. "If tensions are alleviated, this will be 90% thanks to him," he said.
Speaking about the discussions, Mr Khadzhimba said they were devoted to providing conditions for new elections. "I believe there is a possibility that elections will take place," he said.
Mr Bagapsh, for his part, said if they make up a team with Mr Khadzhimba, the president's and vice-president's duties would not differ considerably.
The premier added that Mr Bagapsh and Mr Khadzhimba had both "displayed wisdom and restraint." "This is thanks to them that we managed to end confrontation. We are grateful to both of them," said Mr Khashba.
When asked about the possible election date, Mr Bagapsh said they would not take hasty decisions.
Asked about the possible reaction of his armed supporters to the news, Mr Bagapsh said: "I have enough brains to explain the situation to armed people. I believe they will welcome both of us."
"If gun shots are heard in the city today, do not be afraid. They will be a sign of joy," added Mr Bagapsh.
Abkhazia held presidential elections on October 3. There were five contenders to the post of president: the then Prime Minister Raul Khadzhimba, Sergei Bagapsh, the General Director of the state-owned Chernomorenergo electricity company, ex-Foreign Minister Sergei Shamba, ex-Premier Anri Dzhergenia, and Yakub Lakoba, the leader of the People's Party. The elections were tarnished with scandals. Abkhazia's Election Commission only announced the results on October 11, and named Mr Bagapsh, who ran from the opposition, the winner. His main rival, Mr Khadzhimba, immediately contested the results. Abkhazian society was on the verge of a split.
