SUKHUMI, December 6, (RIA Novosti) - An agreement between Sergei Bagapsh and Raul Khadzhimba on a new presidential election in Abkhazia (a self-proclaimed republic on Georgian territory) may be signed on Monday.

"There is no agreement yet, but negotiations are going on. I think understanding will be reached and an agreement signed today in the middle of the day," Bagapsh told RIA Novosti. As he explained, he will contest the new poll as a presidential candidate, and Khadzhimba as a vice-presidential candidate.

On Sunday evening, Bagapsh and Khadzhimba had another round of talks attended by Abkhazia's Prime Minister Nodar Khashba.

Bagapsh told reporters that "if agreement is reached, we will pull back all armed men."

At the same time, Otar Khetsia, head of the Abkhazian capital's interior department, told RIA Novosti that three blasts had rocked the centre of Sukhumi on Monday night. There were no casualties.

He said the explosions occurred in the city centre, near school No. 1 and a hotel under construction. The first blast took place at 3.40 a.m., Moscow time, and the others followed with 20-minute intervals each.

"No casualties or victims were reported, but some material damage was done, with school windows smashed," Khetsia said.

He said that preliminary estimates put the yield of each blast at 200-300 grammes of TNT equivalent.

"The explosions have been aimed at destabilising the situation in the city," Khetsia believes.

The nature of explosive devices is being identified. Investigations are being carried out by operative services.
