MOSCOW, December 10 (RIA Novosti) - President Vladimir Putin has given a high assessment to relations between Russia and Spain.

"I am happy to say that relations between Russia and Spain have been developing in the best possible way in recent years," the Russian leader said in opening remarks at a meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.

"This does not refer to cooperation in the political sphere alone, although it is extremely important. We have demonstrated a high level of relations between our nations, which have always been very confidential, which is still more important," said President Putin.

Mr. Putin also noted the brisk development of economic contacts between Russia and Spain. "Commodity turnover has risen by 15% over the past year," said the president.

Mr. Putin admitted the two countries were facing problems in their trade and economic relations.

"I am glad to have an opportunity to discuss international issues, 'synchronize watches' on terrorism-related matters," said the president.

The Russian leader attaches much significance to relations with Spain's royal family.

"We enjoy very good relations, they are a very nice family," said Mr. Putin.

Mr. Zapatero conveyed regards to Mr. Putin from the king of Spain. "The king loves you very much," said the premier.

"His Majesty and his family are welcome to visit Russia any time," responded Mr. Putin.

"We are happy to have such wonderful relations [with the royal family], we feel their warm attitude toward Russia and have a great respect for the king and the members of his family," said the Russian president.

"I remember the king last came for hunting, but we did not make a single shot," smiled the president.

"At first I did not want to shoot, and the king laughed at me, 'some hunter.' But when a big, beautiful deer appeared in front of him the king did not shoot either," said the president.

"I told him: 'Your Majesty, why did not you shoot? Aren't you a hunter?' He helplessly waved his hand. The king felt pity," said Vladimir Putin.

Mr. Zapatero said the king and the government of Spain had inquired about the date of the Russian president's state visit to Spain in 2005.

"Thank you. We will agree on the date through the foreign ministries. I remember their invitation. My colleagues and I will pay a visit without fail," said Mr. Putin.

Among the issues that dominated today's meeting was bilateral economic cooperation, efforts against terrorism, developments in Iraq and Ukraine and Russia-European Union cooperation.
