YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, December 13 (RIA Novosti) - Sources in the Sakhalin regional committee on international, external trade and inter-regional ties told RIA Novosti that Russian and Japanese businessmen planned to discuss the cooperation between Japan and Russia's Far East during a business forum on the island of Hokkaido (Japan).

"On December 13-17, a delegation from the Sakhalin region will visit Sapporo to participate in the 11th plenary meeting of the permanent joint committee on economic cooperation between Hokkaido and the Russian Far East," the sources revealed.

In addition, Sapporo will host a joint meeting of working groups and consulting committees formed in the framework of the agreement on friendship and economic cooperation between the Hokkaido prefecture and the Sakhalin region. The document was signed in November 1998.

At the same time, the capital of the northernmost prefecture of Japan will host the meeting of the Russian-Japanese working group on economic cooperation in the Far East. Representatives of the largest Japanese association of economic organizations Keidanren and Russian Far East officials and businessmen will gather at the negotiation table.

During the visit, the Russian delegation will present the draft of the Sakhalin-Japan energy supply project.

The Russian delegation from the Far East also includes representatives of RAO UES. The Sakhalin-Japan energy supply project developed by RAO UES and the Japanese Sumitomo Corporation envisions the construction of a combined-cycle electric power plant in Sakhalin, several transformers, land power transmission line and an underwater electric cable connecting Sakhalin with Japanese islands of Hokkaido and Honshu.

The construction of the "electric bridge" is aimed at implementation of various international oil and gas projects developed in Sakhalin, RIA Novosti sources reported.
