CHINESE LEADER RECEIVES RUSSIAN DEFENSE MINISTER

BEIJING, December 13 (RIA Novosti) - President of the People's Republic of China Hu Jintao received Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov. Mr. Hu Jintao highly praised the contribution of the Russian minister in cooperation between Armed Forces of both countries.

"You are making a great contribution to the development of cooperation between Russian and Chinese Armed Forces," he said at the start of the meeting.

In response, Sergei Ivanov thanked the Chinese leader for the opportunity of the meeting and high evaluation of his work.

Mr. Ivanov passed warm regards and wishes of the Russian President Vladimir Putin to the Chinese President.

Deputy Chairman of the Central Military Council of the People's Republic of China Go Bosyun stated during the meeting with Mr. Ivanov that the Chinese side believed the meeting of the Russian-Chinese intergovernmental committee on military-technical cooperation was a success.

Mr. Go Bosyun confirmed the previous reports of the planned joint Russian-Chinese military exercises in 2005.

"We are exited about this," he said

Mr. Go Bosyun added that the protocol on the joint military exercises was signed in June 2004.

In his turn, Chinese Defense Minister Cao Gangchuan called the results of his talks with the Russian Defense minister "exceptional."

"I think that all current meetings will have great impact on the cooperation between our Armed Forces," the Chinese defense minister stated.

According to Mr. Ivanov, the sides have conducted four rounds of talks so far. They were all dedicated to issues of expanding strategic partnership between Russia and China and development of military-technical cooperation between the two countries.

"These meetings allowed us to understand each other better and to check upon the implementation of previous agreements," Mr. Ivanov said.
