NEW-GENERATION INTERNET IN RUSSIA

MOSCOW, December 15 (RIA Novosti) - A new generation of Internet, Internet-2, has come to Russia.

The Internet-2 technologies boost the speed and amount of network data, broaden the possibility of passing radio and television signals through the network. The Internet-2 data-transmission speed is up to 10 gigabits/second.

Specialists say that with the new technology a 30-minute video film is transmitted in a second.

The new Internet technology was developed all the way back in 1978. Development of Internet-2 began in 1992 and its phasing in in Western countries began in the late 1990s. Since 2003 most software producers have been providing technical support for Internet-2.

For ordinary clients the speed of data transmission will be increased 150 times in comparison with the present widespread ADSL-channel, the representative of the company phasing in Internet-2 told RIA Novosti.

To him, connecting to Internet through telephone ensures a speed of 40 kilobits/second, through ADSL-modem up to 7 megabits/second, while Internet-2 will transfer data at 1 gigabit/second.

The new Internet version will greatly increase network security in comparison with ordinary Internet, specialists say.

"In ordinary Internet you trade productivity for security. In Internet-2 the provision of security does not mean a lower speed of data transmission," noted Alexander Malis, vice-president of a company providing Internet-2 services.

Users of Internet-2 can make use of ordinary Internet, while the use of Internet-2 from the ordinary network is impossible, he said.

Internet-2 services are provided only to corporate clients yet. In the six months to come, private users can join in. And in a year of two "a massive switchover to the new technology will begin," Malis said.

So far, Internet-2 is available to clients in Moscow and the region. In a matter of months, the nearby regional centers - Ryazan, Kaluga and Tula - may get the opportunity.
