MOSCOW, December 16 (RIA Novosti) - Russia could play the leading role in the construction of a gas pipeline linking India, Pakistan and Iran, Pakistani ambassador to the Russian Federation Syed Iftikhar Murshed said at a RIA Novosti press conference.

"I have had a productive meeting with Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller and asked for Russia's active participation in the project", he noted.

The project costs $3 billion, the Pakistani ambassador said.

On December 4 a Gazprom delegation visited Pakistan. Alexei Miller is going to pay another visit next month, he reported.

He expects at least 30 Russian companies to participate in EXPO Pakistan-2005, due to be held on February 2-5, 2005 in Karachi.

"Thirty companies have claimed the intention to participate in it. However, I will try to double their number", the ambassador said. In all, 500 Pakistani and over 1,000 foreign companies will take part in the event, he said.

"It will be an ideal possibility for Russian companies to establish cooperation at the international level", the Pakistani diplomat said. According to him, President Pervez Musharraf will attend EXPO Pakistan.
