MOSCOW, December 18 (RIA Novosti) - According to German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, efforts on the UN reform are an important sphere of German-Russian international cooperation.

Mr. Schroeder announced this in an interview with Rossiiskaya Gazeta published on Saturday, December 18 prior to the interstate German-Russian consultations.

In his words, Germany comes out for a large-scale reform and enlargement of the UN Security Council. "We would like to make the UN Security Council more representative. Germany is ready to assume big responsibility within the framework of this reform as a permanent member of the UN Security Council," Gerhard Schroeder emphasized.

He thanked Russia for supporting Germany's efforts in this sphere. "I highly value Russia's unambiguous support for our reformatory approaches and this Germany's desire," the chancellor noted.

According to Mr. Schroeder, world order based on security is a common goal of Germany and Russia.

"Nothing but actions based on common values and principles can yield long-term successful results in rebuffing regional and global threats," the German leader said.

The settlement in Iraq and the Middle East, the situation in the Western Balkans and other regional issues are always on the agenda of German-Russian consultations at all levels, Gerhard Schroeder added. "We are discussing efforts on the achievement of a consensus and balance of interests within international organizations," he noted.
