MOSCOW, December 18 (RIA Novosti) - Konstantin Tszyu, absolute world boxing champion, bantam weight, has been appointed international ambassador of Moscow in its bid to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, reports Pyotr Vasilyev, chief spokesman for the Moscow bidding committee.

The boxer is joining an ambassadorial team of more than a hundred Russian athletes, world and Olympic champions of many years.

Konstantin Tszyu, 35, is one of the best-known Russian athletes living outside his country. He made the youngest-ever national champion at the age of sixteen. Now, he is in Moscow to receive the year's highly sought award to the best Russian athlete abroad.

"If the world wants a city to arrange unprecedented Olympics, it ought to look at Moscow. I am proud to be of help, and I hope Moscow will win as the International Olympic Committee votes the 2012 venue, next July," he commented on his ambassadorial appointment.

Valery Shantsev, Moscow vice-mayor and bidding committee chairman, was happy to learn that the boxer is joining city ambassadors. "Konstantin Tszyu knows what it is to struggle up for a cherished dream to come true even if the dream is so ambitious as to make Moscow Olympic venue. The renowned athlete lives and works outside his country but remains patriot of Russia and Moscow, as thousands of his fellow countrymen who have settled in many countries and we take pride in their patriotism," he said.
