CHECHNYA: SECRET SERVICES PREVENT 62 TERRORIST ACTS

GROZNY, December 18 (RIA Novosti) - Sixty-two terror acts have been prevented since the beginning of the year, and 63 militant bases destroyed, said the Chechen republican board of the Federal Security Service, or FSB, as it gathered in session today to sum up the year's work.

Emergency safety measures helped a successful federal presidential poll, and an extraordinary republican presidential election.

The FSB cooperated with other law enforcement bodies to track down and confiscate 267 paramilitary cachets with a solid stock of arms, munitions, equipment and communication technology.

Sixty-two militants surrendered during special operations.

The counterintelligence service cut a channel on which rebels were getting money from the Middle East via Transcaucasia.

Two Georgian journalists were deported from Russia last September for instigating anti-government action by Beslan hostages' relations.

Chechen citizens are receiving compensations for damaged houses and other property. There are swindles in the process. Overall, 1,283 persons illegally enlisted for grants were tracked down, with 45 criminal files passed to the republican top prosecutor's office.

Big efforts are underway to block terrorist financing by underhand petroleum product trade. The FSB board destroyed or dismantled 473 mini oil refineries, and confiscated 2,250 tons of stolen petrochemical products.

The board prevented embezzlements to the sum of 547.2 million rubles ($1=28.8 rubles).

Board investigators launched criminal proceedings on 27 cases. Twenty people have been convicted on cases the board successfully detected.
