ST. PETERSBURG, December 24 (RIA Novosti's Anna Novak) - An exhibition entitled "Christmas in St. Petersburg" will open on Christmas eve in the State History Museum in St. Petersburg.

The exposition deals with historical Christmas traditions in Russia's northern capital - parties, charity balls, masked balls, concerts, Christmas dishes and decoration of Christmas trees.

Several hundreds showpieces will be presented in the museum: fancy dresses, Christmas tree decorations, gifts, postcards, bills and recipes.

During the celebrations of Catholic and Orthodox Christmas charity auctions will take place in St. Petersburg.

West European paintings of the 19th century and masterpieces of Russian applied art will be put to auction on December 24. Contemporary icons and works by modern St. Petersburg artists will be sold on January 7.

The money gained by the auctions will be forwarded to the Repin Art Academy in St. Petersburg on the organization of the studies of the history of antiquities.

The charity auctions are organized by the Russian Art and European Building Project companies. "The pre-revolutionary tradition of Christmas charity auctions is being revived for the first time in almost 100 years," the organizing committee said.
