VLADIKAVKAZ, December 30 (RIA Novosti's Albina Olisayeva) - Beslan's Public Council determined to donate a million rubles to tsunami-stricken Southeast Asian areas out of a charitable fund established with the school hostage-taking tragedy of September 1-3, says Mairbek Tuayev, council chair.

"The whole wide world gave us a helping hand in our plight. Now, we cannot stand aloof to the plight of Southeast Asian countries. We shall make a transfer as soon as we learn the relevant bank account requisites," he pledged.

A terrorist gang seized a secondary school in the North Caucasian town during an academic year opening gala, September 1. More than a thousand were taken hostage-children, their parents and teachers. The hostages took to a panicky flight after a blast shook the school, September 3. The terrorists were shooting fugitives in the back. Soldiers retaliated by attacking the gang, and bitter fighting lasted several hours. The appalling terror act took 330 lives. There were 186 children among the victims.

The bereaved town has cancelled all New Year's public entertainment, says the Polit.ru political information website. A New Year tree has not appeared in the Beslan central square for a first time within many years. Kindergartens alone will have children's parties.

"The Public Council and municipal authorities made this decision together. It meets the entire community's desire," said Mairbek Tuayev.
