CHECHNYA CAPITAL GETS A CHILDREN'S ORPHANAGE

MOSCOW, December 30, (RIA Novosti) - An orphanage for children has opened in the Staropromyslovsky district of Grozny, the presidential administration of the Chechen Republic told RIA Novosti.

"President Alu Alkhanov took part in the opening ceremony," a source told the agency.

The source said that the orphanage caters for 50 children, and took 6.3 billion rubles ($1 = 27.75 rubles) to build.

"The new orphanage is located on the restored premises of a former kindergarten," the official of the administration added.

"It is our task to surround them [children] with care and attention, and if it is necessary, knock on my doors," Alkhanov was quoted at the administration as saying.

According to information available to the administration, similar orphanages are already functioning in the Shali, Kurchaloi and Nadterechny districts of Chechnya, and also in Argun.

"To date Chechnya has two thousand orphaned children, 28,000 children grow in one-parent families, and more than 16,000 are handicapped," the source told the agency.

He said that it is planned to set up a further eight orphanages in the republic.
