PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, February 7 (RIA Novosti, Oksana Guseva) - A gas and ash cloud has risen above the crater of the Shiveluch volcano on the Kamchatka peninsula, according to Alexei Ozerov, a senior employee at the Russian Academy Sciences' Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

At about midday, a scorching stream of pumice fragments, volcano ash and 800-900C gas burst out of Shiveluch, the northernmost active volcano on the peninsula, Mr. Ozerov told RIA Novosti.

The ash train is moving west and could reach 50 - 100 kilometers in length.

Shiveluch (3,283 meters high) is in the active eruption stage, which worsened on May 10 of last year. The ash cloud's height has reached some ten kilometers above the crater and scorching streams of lava are moving down the volcano's slopes. The territory surrounding Shiveluch is closed for visitors.

Klyuchevskoi, Eurasia's highest Volcano at 4,822 meters high and 80 kilometers from the Shiveluch, continues to erupt. It is spewing out ash and a luminescence is visible above its crater.

According to Mr. Ozerov, the growing slag cone in the upper part of the crater is up to 100 meters high and the lava that filled the crater caused streams of about 1,100 degrees along the volcano slopes.

The sharp difference in temperatures when the lava interacts with snow and ice causes strong explosions and the isolation of the ash.

Mr. Ozerov explained that when lava is flowing down, the appearance of strong mud streams is inevitable. These streams usually reach up to 500 meters wide and flow to the east of the village of Klyuchi, about 30 kilometers from the volcano.

Klyuchevskoi started erupting on January 17. At night, even in bad weather, a strong luminescence is visible above its crater. Volcano bombs are outbursts of up to 200 - 300 meters high. Usually the eruption of the top crater lasts from one month to several years.

The mud streams that can carry trees and stones of up to 3 meters in diameter pose a danger to people and equipment. The outbursts of ash from the volcano craters are also very dangerous for foreign and domestic airlines.
